Handcraft Octagonal Ironwood 6-Coat Couple Chopsticks (Edo Karaki Chopsticks)
Proudct description
Two pairs of octagonal ironwood Edo Karaki chopsticks, made in Japan.
A blend of traditional craftsmanship and the natural beauty of the precious ironwood (Tagayasan).
Ironwood, named for its heavy and hard qualities reminiscent of an iron sword, features a black and reddish pattern in its heartwood, making it strong against the wind and highly durable, often used in construction and as a symbol of longevity. These woods are highly valued for their rarity and the restrictions on their export from their countries of origin, making them precious materials for chopsticks that offer a warm and comfortable grip, enhancing the dining experience by leveraging the natural characteristics of the wood.
Brand:
Edo Karaki Chopsticks, originating from Tokyo, are known for their durability and the warmth of the wood itself. Crafted by Tokyo's wood chopstick artisans and Kiso's lacquer craftsmen, each pair is meticulously hand-finished, pursuing both functionality and beauty. The artisans focus on ease of grip and picking up food, carefully shaping each chopstick from head to tip using a machine called a sander, relying on the sensation in their fingers. The lacquer, applied by craftsmen from Nagano Prefecture's Kiso area, is refined using only sunlight, resulting in a subdued gloss that becomes shinier over time. These chopsticks are a testament to the pursuit of craftsmanship, combining the skills of wood and lacquer artisans to create chopsticks that are not only durable but also convey the warmth of natural wood.
